Gita a Londra

POST N° 5

GITA A LONDRA
Sabato: giorno completamente libero!!! Gita a Londra organizzata da Ms Eileen (la signora che mi ha ospitato). Riporto le istruzioni che mi ha scritto:
Brighton – London – Victoria Station
Come out of the front of the station – turn (L)- turn (R) and walk …. To Buckingham Palace Road – Buckingham Gate – Buckingham Palace
Unfortunately there is no “changing of the Guard” this Saturday.
Find out what flags fly off the top of Buckingham Palace and why.
Walk down The Mall (big road in front of Buckingham Palace), on the (L) is Clarence House and St James Palace
• Clarence House: last remaining aristocratic townhouse in London ; now the official residence of HRH Prince of Wales (Charles) and the Duchess of Cornwall (Camilla)
• James Palace: the most senior Royal Palace. Built by Henry VIII in 1651 in Tudor Style. Now the home of many official offices).
At the end of the Mall – go under Admiralty Arch – into Trafalgar Square ( the National Gallery, art gallery, is across the top of the square. It is open and free but will take up a lot of your time!!) also see Nelsons Column. Why is he so high? So that he can see the sea!! Nelson was an admiral on the sea.
From Trafalgar Square look for a road called The Strand
Get the number 11 bus (the stop is opposite Charing Cross station).
Go upstairs!!
The bus goes along the Strand – Savoy Hotel on the (R) - the only road in England where we must drive on the right!
Bus goes round the Aldwych –on the (L) see The Royal Courts of Justice and in the middle of the road a church called St. Clement Danes
• The Royal Courts of Justice: very large beautiful buildings: inside looks like a cathedral The High Court of England is here
• St. Clement Danes church: (in middle of the opposite Royal Court) is the RAF ( Royal Air Force) church.

You are now entering the City of London ( known as the Square Mile) up to now you have been in the city of Westminster.
This point marks the boundary between the City of Westminster and the City of London. See the Dragon Statue in the middle of the road (where the Queen must ask permission to enter the City)
The bus goes along Fleet Street (was the home of all the English newspapers) – to Ludgate Circus – Ludgate Hill.
Arrive at St. Pauls Cathedral . Get off bus. You can go in but there is a charge
Lots of our Royal weddings happen here (Princess Diana for example)
It is really worth seeing.
Also you should go up – in St Pauls – to the Whispering Gallery.
Back on the bus! – very short journey – Cannon street and onto Bank
• Bank : (where you must off n. 11 bus) this is a major junction in the middle of the City (the financial centre of England) . also here – the Royal Exchange (was the Bourse), today any news about the death of a monarch (king/queen) or new monarch coming to the throne – the news is read from the steps. Also quite near – Mansion House . home of the Lord Mayor. You are right in the middle of the City here. Monday – Friday – very busy.
You must get off the bus here.
Find King William Street – walk down to the Monument (the Monument is to the Great Fire of London and was built between 1671 and 1677 in memory of the Great Fire of London in 1666. : you can climb up many steps for a great view.
Walk along Lower Thames Street to Tower of London. You can go in the Tower of London. The famous Crown Jewels kept here also.
You can go in (expensive I’m afraid) or you can just look. It is the first time you have seen the River Thames- London Bridge and Tower Bridge. From Tower Pier get a boat . back to Westminster. A lovely ride.
Notice: the Millenium Bridge,( a new bridge) and the “ London Eye” (on L – boat may stop there)
Get off boat at Westminster Pier.
See the House of Parliament and Parliament Square. Just a couple 0f minutes walk. Also Westminster Abbey
Then take n. 11 bus along Victoria Street (or you can walk – about 15 minutes – to Victoria Station – and back to Brighton
